A further challenge to the Board of Education

Can you please explain why you are not holding all of the school employees equally accountable for its financial situation?

I would just love for even one of you to have the decency to tell the public who elected you to serve them why you are targeting just one section of employees for cost savings.  You just concluded a deal with teachers that required them to pay FAR LESS than you are asking support staff to pay (both as a percentage of earnings and in actual dollar amounts)and they are naturally the least able financially to do so.

Make some sense of that for the community if you will.

  1. For the last couple months I have made it very clear at our Board meetings that we need to make cuts across the board. Kevin McCrory has also voiced his opinion and agreed that we need shared sacrifice in our district. I have said, several times, at our Board meetings that we shouldn’t expect the lowest paid employees to make the biggest concessions. For example, our support staff group has been asked to come up with $500,000 in savings for their group while our administrators have been asked only to contribute 10% to their healthcare. (approx. $12,000 if I’m correct) I’m not sure I see any “shared” sacrifice in those numbers and I have made that clear in our meetings. I am only one voice on the Board and it takes the Board as a whole to make decisions. I would encourage all members of the community to voice their opinions. All board members can be contacted through the NB Area Schools website: http://www.nbbroncos.net or at any Board meeting held the 2nd and 4th Monday’s of every month at 7pm at the old elementary school.
*Tonight’s meeting will be at the HS auditorium at 7pm.

  2. It is clear to me from your comments that there is absolutely no intention for a shared responsibility approach. Clearly this is about administrators protecting themselves and their own salaries and positions and has nothing to do with savings. If you choose to go down the outsourcing path I dont understand why you stop at custodial and bus drivers. There must be millions of dollars to be saved on outsourcing administration and forcing employee only insurance on to the teachers as English and Bruff have done to the support staff. Speaking purely from a personal position I want my wife to outsourced, a 43% wage cut is a totally untenable position for anyone yet alone the lowest paid employees. My heart goes out to all the families that are affected, I wish you all the best of luck in the future.

Thank you Mrs. Russell for taking the time to explain your position I like your approach of shared responsibilty, sadly we do not have an administration with either the ability or integrity to take that approach.
